There are also members of the congregation involved in a church hockey and soccer league. There are a number of benefits associated with sports or physical activity that are helpful in fulfilling our responsibility as people created in the image of God. The apostle Paul writes (1 Corinthians 6:19) “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,” so that the Lord also holds us responsible to take care of our bodies. Although Paul’s point here is that we may not defile our bodies with sinful actions, the fact that the Spirit lives in us indicates we are also responsible to take care of our physical bodies by exercising the body through sports and other activities.
Team sports also have the benefit of encouraging God’s people to work together in a cooperative way. It can give us the skills that we need to work together cooperatively within the church as people of God (1 Corinthians 12). When we are involved in sporting activity, we are also called to treat the opponent with respect since they too are created in the image of God. The Lord calls us to treat others with respect (Matthew 7:12).
